Initially introduced in 1999, the BMW X5 has been a favorite of the BMW lineup for nearly three decades at this point. Of course, it has seen numerous changes across the exterior and interior since then. These changes have brought us to the modern X5, which is more impressive than ever.

The X5 features a slick exterior with the classic front BMW grille. It maintains the appearance of a luxury SUV while having a bit of an aggressive edge to it. The 2025 X5 is mostly a carryover from the 2024 model year, but it does feature a few impressive tech upgrades. The X5 comes in four different packages, with these being:
The base sDrive40i features rear-wheel drive, while the upper three come standard with all-wheel drive.
Jumping over to the X5s power, you can expect around the same out of the sDrive40i and xDrive40i. Both of these models are powered by a 375 horsepower turbocharged inline-six engine. The xDrive50e, the plug-in hybrid model, pairs this engine up with an electric motor to deliver 483 horsepower.
At the top of the lineup, the m60i features a 523 horsepower twin-turbo v-8 that packs a nice punch. Combined with the stable handling and reliable cornering, the X5 makes for a fun drive no matter which package you choose. For a 0-60, you’re looking at around 5.2 seconds for the xDrive40i, 3.9 seconds for the xDrive50e, and a nice 3.6 seconds for the M60i.
As far as mileage, the EPA estimates the xDrive50e to offer 22mpg in the city, 23mpg on the highway, and 58MPGe. The sDrive40i and xDrive40i sit the same at 23 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. A more powerful engine makes the mileage a little worse for the M60i at 17 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway.
The inside cabin features all the technology and infotainment you expect BMW to deliver. The instrument cluster sits on a 12.3-inch screen right behind the wheel, while a 14.9-inch touchscreen center display operates on BMW’s iDrive software. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, along with a wireless charging pad and Wi-Fi hotspot.

One of the big updates to the 2025 X5 is the addition of an optional hands-free driving system. The neat feature of this system is that drivers can initiate a lane change by looking toward the corresponding side view mirror.
