Lexus NX Hybrid Luxury Electric VehicleThe Lexus NX is a luxury plug-in hybrid SUV. As a plug-in hybrid, it can run on both gas and electric power separately. The NX has an electric-only driving range of 37 miles. However, drivers can still fill up their NX Hybrids at gas stations for traditional gas-powered driving.

As a luxury plug-in hybrid, the NX requires gasoline with a higher octane rating than most gas engine vehicles. The Lexus NX Hybrid requires gas with an octane rating of at least 91. This means most drivers do need to fill up their NX using premium gas.

About Premium Gas and Octane Ratings

Most gas stations offer a few different gasoline options. While the names may change, the general categories are “Regular”, “Plus”, and “Premium”. The distinction between these gas qualities is their octane rating. Regular gas usually has an octane rating between 85 and 87. The middle range, plus gas, is usually between 87 and 90. Premium gas, the highest-level category, usually has an octane range between 91 and 94.

The octane rating of a type of fuel refers to its ability to withstand compression. Most combustion engine vehicles only need gas with an octane rating between 85 and 87. Thus, most drivers will only ever fill up their car with regular gasoline.

However, certain models have higher compression engines. This means that their engines can be damaged over time if they are fueled by gas with a lower octane rating. For these models, either plus or premium gas may be required in order to protect the engine in the long-term.

The Lexus NX Hybrid is one example of a vehicle with a gas engine that requires the highest octane ratings. As such, NX Hybrid owners should always use premium gas when filling up their vehicle.
