In a traditional gas-engine car, multiple gears are needed to transfer energy at higher speeds. However, electricity is converted to energy much more efficiently than gasoline. This means that electric vehicles can get by with one or two gears, as opposed to four or five. Because of this, electric cars do not need to change gears as they gain speed. This results in a much smoother acceleration for most electric vehicle models over gas engine cars.

Why Does the Porsche Taycan Have Two Gears?

While electric vehicles only need one gear, it does not mean there are no benefits to adding a second gear. The second gear in the Porsche Taycan allows the luxury electric sedan to do a couple of unique things. The first gear gives the Taycan even better acceleration than most EVs, going from 0-60 MPH in just 2.6 seconds.

The Porsche Taycan’s second gear, meanwhile, allows it to maintain a longer driving range at high speeds. The two-speed transmission allows the engine to operate more efficiently at top speeds, such as when driving on the highway. This gives the Taycan a major advantage for longer trips, as high-speed driving can cause batteries to drain quicker.

The standard Porsche Taycan can travel up to 242 miles on a single charge. However, drivers can also upgrade to the Performance Battery Plus for a driving range of 282 miles.
