What is the Difference Between CPO and Used?

April 29th, 2024 by

Those in the market for a new vehicle have likely stumbled across the abbreviation CPO. This stands for certified pre-owned, but what does this mean, exactly? Some may wonder whether this simply means that is just a used car, but this is not the case.

Mileage and Age

It is pretty unpredictable what will be found in the used vehicle market. Someone may find the make and model of the vehicle they want just to find out it has 300,000 miles. Fortunately, this will not be the case with CPO vehicles.

To achieve the CPO title, the vehicle must be under a certain amount of years old and a certain mileage. These requirements can vary between manufacturers. For Mercedes-Benz, the vehicle must be under six years old and have less than 75,000 miles.

Warranty Protection

A typical used vehicle will likely not have any additional warranty protection. However, CPO vehicles will have a warranty from the manufacturer or dealership selling them. This can help to protect important components within the drive train and more.

Inspection

Depending on the dealership from which a used vehicle is purchased, it may not have been inspected. Or, it may have had a brief inspection to ensure it at least runs. This means people can end up with vehicles that break down not long after they are bought, and the owner won’t have much they can do.

Conversely, CPO vehicles must pass a rigorous inspection standard set by the manufacturer. If anything is discovered during the inspection, it will be repaired before passing. Additionally, after the inspection, the vehicle will also be thoroughly road-tested.

Price

Since CPO vehicles have much higher standards, they will be more expensive than generally used vehicles. However, this extra cost delivers a higher quality standard and ensures the vehicle will last the buyer longer. However, many dealerships will offer special leasing or financing programs for CPO vehicles that can offer excellent terms.

Why CPO Can Be a Better Option Than Buying New

Depending on driving habits and lifestyle, CPO vehicles may often be a better option for many people. If the individual doesn’t have a long commute or rough driving habits, a CPO vehicle can often last for years to come. Additionally, CPO inventory is a great way to find sought-after vehicle models that are no longer on the market.
