Electric vehicle owners can save thousands of dollars each year simply by not spending money on gas. Additionally, electric cars consistently have much lower maintenance costs than gas engine cars.

But what are the best family electric cars available? There are several factors to consider when shopping for a family car aside from budget. Cargo space, passenger capacity, and safety are all very important qualities in a family car. Here is a breakdown of some of the most spacious electric cars available in 2022.

Most Spacious Electric Cars

For now, we will just be looking at the most spacious electric cars in terms of cargo volume. The electric cars with the highest passenger volume are a separate category.

#3: Ford Mustang Mach-E

Cargo space is probably not the first thing most people think of when they hear the name “Ford Mustang.” But the fully-electric Mustang SUV makes the most of its design. A 4.8- cubic foot front trunk (“Frunk”) is paired with 29.7 cubic feet of rear cargo room. That increases to 59.7 when the rear seats are folded down.

#2: Tesla Model Y

The Model Y has a slightly smaller 4.1-cubic foot frunk. But it makes up the difference with 72.1 cubic feet of total cargo space with rear seats folded down. When the Model Y is at full passenger capacity, it still offers 30.2 cubic feet of cargo space.

#1: Tesla Model X

Tesla claims each of the top two spots on this list, with the Model X taking the crown. That starts with an extra spacious frunk, at 6.1 cubic feet. The Model X maxes out at 85.1 cubic feet of cargo volume with the rear seats down, and 37.1 cubic feet when all seats are up.

Most Spacious Luxury Electric Cars

In a separate category, we will also look at some of the most spacious luxury electric vehicles available in 2022. LEVs offer more advanced technologies, features, and performance than mainstream electric models. Many of these luxury SUV models are manufactured by established luxury brands that have recently joined the electric vehicle market.

#3: Jaguar I-Pace

The Jaguar I-Pace combines luxury with functionality by offering drivers 23.3 cubic feet of standard cargo space. With the rear seats folded down, that increases to 54.1 cubic feet of total cargo volume.

#2: Audi e-Tron Sportback

Audi’s e-Tron Sportback is a top-performing electric SUV in many categories. That includes total cargo space. With the rear seats up, the e-Tron Sportback provides 27.2 cubic feet of cargo volume. That space doubles to 54.5 cubic feet when the rear seats are folded down.

#1: Audi e-Tron

The Audi e-Tron Sportback is a slightly more compact model than the standard Audi e-Tron. With that, it makes sense that the e-Tron would also be one of the most spacious electric cars in the luxury category. The e-Tron is, in many ways, an ideal family vehicle. Its spacious interior is a big part of that, literally and figuratively. With the rear seats folded down, the e-Tron provides 56.4 cubic feet of cargo space. With the whole family on board and the back seats in use, the e-Tron still manages 28.5 cubic feet of space.
